John Paulin Hansen is an Associate Professor at the IT University of Copenhagen. He received a MSc in 1984 and a PhD in 1992 both in Psychology from Institute of Psychology, University of Aarhus. His research areas are human factors, cognitive modelling and gaze-based interaction. He has published more than 30 research papers within this area. John Paulin Hansen pioneered the use of eye-tracking technology for usability studies 20 years ago and holds two US- patents in gaze based interaction. He has been engaged in several research projects with eye tracking to investigate attention strategies of ship navigators, pilots, anaesthesiologists, nuclear power plant operators and car drivers.
He initiated and was co-organizing the IST EU Sixth framework programme “Communication by Gaze Interaction” (COGAIN), 2004 – 2009, with approximately 100 researchers participating from all over the world.
Three of his PhD students formed The Eye Tribe Company in 2011. This company are working on several innovative gaze tracking products and have been awarded the ABB Award for Global Innovation in Stockholm, November 2011 and an award in the Product & Technology category in the Venture Cup Idea Competition, Copenhagen 2012. The Eye Tribe received 12 million D.kr in support from the Danish National Advanced Foundation in December 2012 for a 3-year research project in collaboration with ITU, DTU, LEGO Systems A/S and Serious Games Interactive. The purpose of the project is to develop eye-control systems for smartphones.
