    Abstract

The Doctoral School initiative which was set up by the ANDROID network is a core
element of the overall project that aims to strengthen the link between research and
teaching in the area of disaster resilience. The mixed teaching space that we have developed as part of this ongoing project has attempted to encourage and promote the work of doctoral students in this field.

This volume brings together the contributions of all the doctoral researchers taking
part in the RDS (2013) in to a set of full edited proceedings. The papers collated here
demonstrate the richness and interdisciplinary nature of research topics and problems
being addressed by disaster resilience researchers. The submissions cover a wide spectrum of topics such as risk assessment, post-disaster reconstruction, vulnerability, collaborative management, gender issues and communication barriers.
