Abstract

Animation and comics have obvious parallels in their aesthetics, which in the pertinent individual research arenas have not been studied in any depth. Both are based on artistic practices which employ specific techniques for the production of images, techniques which foreground the conditions of their creation. The drawn line of the comic book or cartoon refer to the act of drawing itself; clay figures of stop-motion-film refer to the manual (de-)formation of their bodies; even the hyper-realistic bodies of Superhero_ines of VFX driven cinema often appear clearly as artefacts of their production method. This volume collects interdisciplinary analyses focusing on the parallels, intersections, and differences between the specific traditions and media.
