Abstract

Cargo-mix and containership stowage optimization are unknown problems to most and scientific blind spots with less than 100 publications over more than four decades. This state of affairs borders on the ridiculous, given that containerized shipping is a major driver of the global economy and still uses inefficient cargo management procedures. In this talk, Jensen will show you that these problems – in contrast to the view of publications on the topic – in realistic settings are surprisingly easy. He will outline how to generate optimal stowage plans and cargo-mixes for some of the world’s largest container vessels using standard mathematical programming techniques and off-the-shelf solvers. The presentation will provide basic insight into the domain, with pointers to further information that enable you to join in this promising new path of operations research and business.
